Japanese scientists from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Sciene and Technology have developed a technique whereby lasers create real 3D images floating in the air.
The technology involves "plasma emissions" from nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the air and the lightshow is accompanied by tiny explosions from the expansion of the air heated by the lasers.
Possibly applications for this new technology as it is refined include outdoor pyrotechnics displays and outdoor advertising.
